Sakineh Behjati, a Christian convert residing in Rasht, was sent to Lakan Prison in Rasht on Saturday, April 16, 2022, to serve her two-year prison sentence.
Ms. Behjati is the second Iranian Christian convert to be imprisoned during the Easter period. On the same day, another Christian convert, Fariba Dalir, was sent to Evin Prison to serve her two-year sentence.
According to Hrana News Agency, citing Iman Soleimani, Sakineh Behjati’s defense attorney, she was initially supposed to begin her sentence before Nowruz (the Persian New Year). However, due to her residence in Rasht and having a young child, her attorney requested a one-month delay from the enforcement branch, which was granted. Consequently, her prison sentence began on April 16.
Mr. Soleimani also mentioned that Sakineh Behjati was initially assigned to serve her sentence in Evin Prison in Tehran. However, this was later changed to Lakan Prison in Rasht with the approval of the enforcement branch.
Sakineh Behjati was arrested in May 2020 and was sentenced in August of the same year to two years of imprisonment on charges of "acting against national security by forming a house church and propaganda against the regime through promoting evangelical Christianity."
Christian advocacy organizations report that the Islamic Republic has closed down Persian-language churches and harasses Christians by raiding house churches and their homes.
According to the latest report from the Christian organization "Open Doors," Iran is the ninth most anti-Christian country in the world.
