During his visit to Kazakhstan, Pope Francis criticized the war in Ukraine, calling it "madness" and a catastrophe. He emphasized the need to strengthen cooperation among opposing countries and avoid focusing on competition. This visit marked the second papal trip to Kazakhstan, following Pope John Paul II's visit in 2001.

Pope Francis traveled to the capital city, Nur-Sultan (formerly Astana), for an interfaith gathering. Despite Kazakhstan's close ties with Russia, the Kazakh government has not supported Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Over half of Kazakhstan's population is Muslim, around 25% is Christian, with only 2% being Catholic.
